Fairfax County Park Authority has issued an update on the status of Burke Lake.
As of June 26, FCPA says that, “Burke Lake Park is now clear of high concentrations of harmful blue-green algae. However, please remember that swimming and pets are not permitted in the lake. Keep an eye out for park signs and warnings in the event of another algae bloom.”
Earlier this month, FCPA issued an alert about a harmful algae bloom in progress at Burke Lake. FCPA said a blue-green algae bloom had been identified, and that people and animals should avoid contact with the water. That included swimming, wading, and letting pets enter the lake.
The Virginia Department of Health says most algae are not harmful. However, the agency cautions that “some types of algae in Virginia can be dangerous. Algae species in fresh and salt water may multiply rapidly when environmental conditions are favorable for their development. The great number of algal cells in the water results in what is called an algal bloom.”
Other Fairfax County park news includes a notice that the Riverbend Park marina is closed until further notice due to high river water levels. And that the trail at Ashgrove Historic Site Park connecting east and west sides of Old Courthouse Spring Branch is currently closed due to a stream restoration project.
You can keep up to date on all FCPA facilities on the Park Alerts page.
