What’s the Status of Amazon’s HQ2 Building?

Arlington County’s Board met earlier this month to discuss PenPlace’s development plan.

Arlington County’s Board met earlier this month to discuss Amazon’s plans for its HQ2 building. The plan for the second phase of Amazon’s headquarters, called PenPlace, has been on hold indefinitely since 2023.

The board granted Amazon a three-year extension to develop the HQ2 site. The new deadline for Amazon to act on its plan is June 30, 2028.

The board approved plans for PenPlace back in 2022, but Amazon has not provided a clear timeline on when construction will begin.

The approximately 11-acre PenPlace site is located in Pentagon City within the Aurora Highlands neighborhood. The original HQ2 proposal submitted to Arlington County included approximately 3.3 million square feet divided across four buildings. Three 22-story office buildings would include ground-floor retail space. The spiral-shaped structure, called “The Helix,” would be amenity-focused.

The proposal also includes 2.5 acres of public open space and underground access for vehicles. Acorn LLC and JBG Smith were named as the development consultants on the project.

An Amazon representative told ARLnow that the company has ample space at its Metropolitan Park campus, which opened in June 2023. But that the company still views PenPlace as a long-term investment.
