A major NFL event is coming to Washington, DC. No, it’s not the Super Bowl. (Not yet, anyway.) The NFL is preparing to announce that DC will play host to the NFL Draft in 2027.
The official announcement is expected to be given by President Trump at the White House on May 5 at 1 p.m. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Washington Commanders owner Josh Haris are expected to join Trump at the announcement, according to Axios.
This will mark the first time Washington, DC, has hosted the NFL Draft since 1941, when it was held at the Willard Hotel. The NFL Draft has been rotating between cities since 2015. The last handful of drafts has seen huge fan turnout. More than 600,000 fans attended the three-day event in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in April, according to the NFL.
Early reports show that the NFL wants to host the annual event on the National Mall, with stands near the Washington Monument.
This isn’t the only NFL news coming out of DC recently. Just last week, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Commanders announced a deal for a new stadium at the RFK Campus, bringing the football team back to DC for the first time since 1996. The project is estimated to cost nearly $4 billion and open in 2030.
