Oh Baby! See Virginia’s 2024 Top Baby Names

Here are the top 10 statewide picks for boy and girl names last year. Plus, see what month and day of the week had the most births.

Naming your newborn is a big decision. Do you choose a family name or go with one that’s popular at the time? In Virginia, two baby names have topped the list for several years in a row now.

Top Baby Names in Virginia

Liam and Charlotte continue to be the most popular baby name choices, according to Virginia’s Department of Health and Office of Vital Records. Liam has been the top boy name for six years in a row; Charlotte takes top billing for girl name for the fifth straight year.

The top 10 names for baby boys born in 2024 in Virginia were:

  1. Liam
  2. Noah
  3. James
  4. Oliver
  5. William
  6. Henry
  7. Theodore
  8. Lucas
  9. Elijah
  10. John

The top 10 names for baby girls born in 2024 in Virginia were:

  1. Charlotte
  2. Olivia
  3. Emma
  4. Sophia
  5. Amelia
  6. Isabella
  7. Mia
  8. Ava
  9. Eleanor
  10. Evelyn

The data shows that among Asian parents, the top boys’ and girls’ baby names were Noah and Sophia. For Black parents, the top names were Noah and Nova. Among Hispanic parents, Liam and Mia topped the list. And for white parents, James and Charlotte were the most popular.

Virginia Baby Trivia

The Virginia Department of Health and Office of Vital Records also shared these fun state birth facts for 2024:

  • Month most births occurred in: August (8,370)
  • Day most births occurred on: October 18 (344 births)
  • Most common birthday of the week: Friday (14,274 births)
  • Least common birthday of the week: Sunday (8,778 births)
  • Total born as twins: 2,806
  • Total born as triplets: 53
  • New Year’s Eve births (Dec. 31, 2023): 177
  • New Year’s Day births (Jan. 1, 2024): 161
  • Babies sharing a birthday with Mom: 277
  • Babies sharing a birthday with Dad: 283
