Cherry Blossom Alert: Buds Hit New Stage

The National Park Service is predicting that peak bloom will occur this year between March 28 and 31.

DC’s cherry blossom trees have hit another stage in their blossoming journey, The National Park Service announced today on social media.

NPS updated its Bloom Watch page to note that the buds have reached the “Extension of Florets” stage — the third of six — on March 19. NPS horticulturists are closely monitoring the buds’ development. The fourth stage is “Peduncle Elongation,” followed by “Puffy White,” and finally “Peak Bloom,” which the NPS predicts will happen this year between March 28 to 31.

Peak bloom is the point when 70 percent of the Yoshino blossoms are open, and it varies every year based on the weather conditions. This phase can last several days, though rain or wind can cut the season short.

To celebrate the annual occasion, DC’s National Cherry Blossom Festival is underway until April 14. It includes dozens of events such as the Cherry Blossom Freedom Walk, the Kite Festival, the Sakura Taiko Fest, and the Cherry Blossom 10-Mile.

Area hotels and restaurants are offering special room packages and themed food and drink, and several pop-up bars have also opened.

And if you’re planning your trip to see the trees in bloom, we’ve got you covered with insider tips and intel on where you can check out blooms in Northern Virginia.
