Two individuals from Connecticut have been arrested and charged with running a fake prize scheme and scamming an elderly Woodbridge woman out of $130,000, according to Prince William County Police.
Darien Deventon Smith, 31, and Sheniece Elaine Smith, 32, were charged with obtaining money by false pretenses and conspiracy to commit a felony. They were arrested in Connecticut.
The duo first made contact with the 77-year-old victim back in March 2024. The scam claimed that the woman had won money and a vehicle, but needed to pay fees in order to collect the prizes.
The investigation shows that the victim not only sent the accused money, but also opened multiple bank accounts, provided the two with debit cards, and purchased money orders, DC News Now reports.
Court dates are pending for both Darien and Sheniece Smith.
