Fairfax County Superintendent Michelle Reid will remain in her post for another four years. The Fairfax County School Board voted unanimously on Thursday to extend Reid’s contract through June 2028.
“We are thankful for the dynamic, focused, and thoughtful leadership Dr. Reid has demonstrated since joining FCPS,” said School Board Chair Karl Frisch (Providence District). “Her work has elevated FCPS to new heights by forging stronger relationships with families, students, staff, and the community while focusing on innovative ways to enhance academic expectations and achievement. We look forward to our continued work together as we collaborate to meet the student-centered goals of our 2023-30 strategic plan.”
Reid — listed as No. 2 in Northern Virginia Magazine’s 50 Most Influential list this year — began as the superintendent in 2022. During her tenure, Reid has introduced middle school sports to the district, added more high school sports, and “overhauled nutritional offerings,” according to a news release from FCPS. She set expectations for all students to be reading by third grade, learning algebra by eighth grade, and taking “rigorous high school-course taking patterns.”
In addition, 188 FCPS schools have improved their attendance rates year over year in the past year, and the school system is working to add more electric buses.
The new contract will go into effect immediately, taking over the original contract that would have expired in June 2026.
The new contract details an annual salary of $424,146, plus an annual $12,000 car allowance. Reid’s original salary was $380,000 and was raised annually according to district-wide cost of living adjustments.
