In addition to the presidential race apparently won by former president Donald J. Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris, congressional and local elections were held on Tuesday. The numbers aren’t official yet and won’t be for at least a week, but most of the results in the Northern Virginia area were remarkably similar to those of two years ago — even when the candidates were different. Here’s how Northern Virginia voted in the 2024 elections.
All results come from the Virginia Department of Elections website and are not yet official.
U.S. Senate
Tim Kaine, the incumbent Democrat, appears to have defeated Republican challenger Hung Cao, who unsuccessfully challenged U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton in 2022. Kaine currently sits with 54.11 percent of the vote to Cao’s 45.71 percent, a difference of nearly 400,000 votes with one only precinct left to count.
U.S. House District 7
(Parts of Spotsylania, Stafford, and Prince William counties)
Democrat Eugene Vindman appears to have defeated Republican Derrick Anderson, with 51.51 percent of the vote to Anderson’s 48.22 percent. Vindman is a former Army colonel and the brother of whistleblower Alexander Vindman, whose testimony was key in the first of the two impeachments of former and future president Donald J. Trump. He’ll succeed Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who decided not to run for reelection and will run for governor next year.
U.S. House District 10
(Fauquier and Loudoun counties, parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties, Manassas, Manassas Park)
State Sen. Suhas Subramanyam, a Democrat, appears to have defeated Republican lawyer and business executive Mike Clancy, with 51.94 percent of the vote to Clancy’s 47.70 percent. Subramanyam will likely succeed Rep. Jennifer Wexton, whose health precluded her from running for another term.
All other congressional incumbents appear to have been reelected, including Republican Rep. Ben Cline in the 6th District, Democratic Rep. Don Beyer in the 8th District, and Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly in the 11th District.
Alexandria
Alyia Gaskins, who won the Democratic primary for mayor, was unopposed on Tuesday and will be the city’s first Black woman mayor.
Arlington County
It appears JD Spain has won the race to succeed County Board Chair Libby Garvey, who is retiring. It’s a ranked-choice election, but Spain has 58 percent of the first-choice ballots.
Constitutional Amendment
Voters appear to have approved, with 93 percent of the vote, an amendment to the Virginia Constitution that expands the tax credit offered to spouses of military members killed in action to include spouses of military members who died in the line of duty. All but one precinct has reported.
