Alexandria’s next police chief will be Tarrick McGuire, who is currently the assistant chief of the Arlington, Texas, Police Department.
McGuire takes over the department on November 25, succeeding Chief Don Hayes, who stepped down earlier this year.
“It is vital that our public safety leadership possesses the expertise and vision to implement effective interventions that safeguard our residents,” said City Manager James F. Parajon, in a news release. “Chief McGuire is a proven leader who will continue to lead our police in effectively serving our community.”
Alexandria conducted a nationwide search for its next chief.
McGuire previously served as deputy chief in Arlington, Texas, a department that has 900 employees. He has 11 years of command experience, as well as specialized experience in patrol, investigations, and community relations. Parajon said McGuire has worked with a mentoring program that reduced crime rates and has implemented crime reduction strategies that have led to declines in violent crime.
“I am honored and grateful to accept the position of Police Chief of the Alexandria Police Department,” McGuire said, in the release.
“I believe in a community-oriented approach to policing, building public trust through transparency, and emphasizing communication and collaboration. I look forward to working alongside our dedicated officers, community leaders, and residents to create a safer Alexandria for everyone. I am excited to begin this journey together.”
