College sports fans around the DMV have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. Capital One Arena announced it will host the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey and Division I Women’s Basketball tournaments in the coming years.
The stadium, which is home to the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards, will host games for the two tournaments in 2027 and 2028. The 2027 Ice Hockey Championship — better known as the Frozen Four — will be the second time the DC arena has hosted the championship. The last Frozen Four tournament was in DC back in 2009.
It will be the first time hosting games for the Women’s March Madness tournament, with the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games set for Capital One Arena.
“We are excited to continue the rich tradition of college basketball in DC,” said Jordan Silberman, president of venues at Monumental Sports & Entertainment in a news release. “Our arena has seen first-hand the rapidly rising interest in women’s basketball and we’re looking forward to growing the game further through this iconic event, in partnership with Georgetown University.”
This past season, the Washington Mystics recorded the highest attendance in WNBA history, with over 20,700 fans attending the team’s game against the Indiana Fever when the regular season game was moved from its home stadium, Entertainment & Sports Arena, to Capital One Arena.
Earlier this year, Monumental Sports & Entertainment and the District of Columbia agreed to modernize the Chinatown venue to create “a revitalized entertainment destination in Downtown DC.” The arena hosts on average over 200 events, including concerts, sporting events, comedy shows, and more.
Capital One Arena has been selected to host the 2025 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship, its third time in DC, and the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball East Regional in 2026.
