Loudoun Fire Marshal Restricts Propane Deliveries

The restrictions mean there may be service interruptions in the county and its incorporated towns.

By Colleen Kelleher March 13, 2024 at 10:30 am

Propane deliveries in Loudoun County from Southern States Cooperative, Inc.–Leesburg–Fairfax Petroleum Service have been restricted as the fire marshal continues investigating a Sterling house explosion that occurred on February 16.

In an update, the  Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office said the restrictions on deliveries and transfers of propane included all of the incorporated towns in the county.

“Until Southern States completes its fire code updates, residents of Loudoun County and its incorporated towns may experience interruptions to their normal propane service delivery,” the statement said.

Investigators are working directly with Southern States to review and update its fire code information.

The company supplied propane to the house on 347 Silver Ridge Dr. that the explosion destroyed. Donations through GoFundMe continue to come in to help Kelley Woods, who lost everything.

The explosion resulted from a leaking 500-gallon underground tank. The propane leaked into and around the house, but what ignited the blaze is still unknown.

The blast occurred with firefighters inside the house. Trevor Brown, 45, of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company, died. Nearly a dozen others sustained injuries.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is reviewing how the fire departments on the scene responded. Its report will be published nationally.
