Fairfax County police identified the pedestrian struck and killed in an early Tuesday morning crash in Reston.
Peter McCandless, 87, of Reston, died after he was struck while using a crosswalk at the intersection of Reston Parkway and Market Street, the police said.
According to police, just after 7 a.m. McCandless was crossing the street against the signal when the driver of a 2017 Mercedes ML350 traveling south on Reston Parkway struck him in the right lane.
Fairfax County police said the driver stayed on the scene, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Detectives are continuing to investigate the crash.
McCandless is the ninth pedestrian to die in a crash this year in Fairfax County. Last year at this time, 23 people had been killed in pedestrian crashes.
