In small towns, it doesn’t take many votes to win an election as a write-in candidate and Peterson’s Ice Cream Depot owner Tom Peterson found this out in Clifton.
Peterson beat six-term incumbent Mayor William Hollaway by five votes, 67–62.
The write-in candidate’s campaign included 10 yard signs.
Peterson, who served as mayor in 2006 and 2008, told NBC4 Washington that one of the key things he wants to concentrate on is updating Clifton’s Main Street with safer sidewalks, something he acknowledges will hurt his ice cream business during the construction phase.
Loudoun Race for Commonwealth’s Attorney
In other election news, it looks like Loudoun County will get a new commonwealth’s attorney, but he’s a familiar face.
Republican Bob Anderson appears to have defeated incumbent Democrat Buta Biberaj by 300 votes, 68,068–67,768. Anderson served as commonwealth’s attorney from 1996 to 2003.
Biberaj, the first woman to be elected Loudoun’s top prosecutor, conceded the race on Wednesday. She called it an honor to serve the county.
