Winchester Man Charged in Deadly Crash that Killed His Girlfriend

Jeremiah A.T. Greenfield is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the crash where Haiden Smallwood died earlier this month.

A Winchester man faces charges in connection with a deadly crash where authorities said he drove into a moving Norfolk Southern train in Fauquier County earlier this month.

Virginia State Police charged Jeremiah A.T. Greenfield, 19, with one felony count of second-degree murder/homicide and one felony count of eluding law enforcement. Winchester police officers took him into custody on Friday.

Haidan B. Smallwood, 18, of Berryville, died in the August 2 crash in Delaplane that also injured backseat passenger, Nakii Russell, 20, of Leesburg. Smallwood was a recent graduate of Clarke County High School and planned to study nursing at Liberty University.

Greenfield had been in eluding authorities in a high-speed chase where Fauquier County deputies clocked the stolen 2015 Honda he was driving at 115 mph before the crash, which occurred at the railroad crossing in Delaplane on Route 17 at Route 712.

There, cars were stopped for the train, but Greenfield crossed the center line, disregarded the crossing arms, and struck the train, authorities said. None of the occupants of the car was wearing seatbelts, according to the news release.
