Concert Hall Proposed for Heart of Fairfax

Fairfax-based Ox Hill Cos. has proposed a mixed-use development that would turn Old Town Fairfax into an arts-and-entertainment center.

By Colleen Kelleher May 4, 2023 at 1:51 pm

Fairfax-based Ox Hill Cos. wants to build an arts-and-entertainment center in Old Town Fairfax, the Washington Business Journal reports.

Fairfax-based Ox Hill Cos. proposed putting a 2,700-seat concert hall (with a standing capacity of 4,100) and a seven-story, 163-room hotel on four adjacent properties it has under contract: 4020 University Dr. and 4029, 4031, and 4057 Chain Bridge Rd., according to the Washington Business Journal. The buildings at those locations would be demolished in order for Ox Hill’s proposed mixed-use development to be built. The development would include retail space and restaurants.

For comparison, The Anthem at The Wharf in Washington, DC, has the capacity to have up to 6,000 people.

Chris Smith, Ox Hill’s managing partner, in a Washington Business Journal interview said he sees the development, called The Ox Fairfax, as giving Fairfax “a direction for future economic growth” as “arts, entertainment and hospitality” destination.

Smith said he expects to get the needed rezoning approvals by the end of the year. Construction would start in mid-2024.
