Cherry Blossoms Reach Peak Bloom

Expect crowds if you head to the Tidal Basin to see the trees at their finest.

By Colleen Kelleher March 23, 2023 at 3:37 pm

The cherry blossoms along the Tidal Basin in DC reached peak bloom on Thursday, March 23.

The peak bloom is when when 70 percent of the blossoms on the Yoshino cherry trees open.

The National Park Service predicted the peak would happen between Tuesday and Thursday this week.

Crowds at the Tidal Basin are expected every day this week, the park service said on Wednesday. The trees reached the fifth of six stages, the puffy white stage, on March 18.

We’re not at peak bloom yet, but that doesn’t mean it’s not pretty. If you’re planning on taking sunrise pictures at the Tidal Basin, you won’t be disappointed… or lonely. Expect crowds in the park every day this week as more blossoms open. #cherryblossom #WashingtonDC 🌸🌸🌸 pic.twitter.com/KJCHQRC9yI

Weather always plays a role in when the trees bloom. Once they do, the peak lasts several days.
