A 66-year-old Herndon man is in police custody following a half-day standoff in which he allegedly barricaded himself inside a home and took one person hostage.
Paul Graves peacefully surrendered to police Wednesday morning at the 700 block of Hemlock Court, according to a Herndon Police report, nearly 12 hours after authorities received a call from someone at the residence reporting that a gun had been fired inside the townhome.
Negotiators and detachments from the Fairfax County Police Department SWAT Team, Herndon Police, and Virginia State Police arrived at the scene as Graves allegedly barricaded himself with the hostage, who later escaped unharmed.
Additional reports of gunshots followed, but no injuries were reported, police confirmed.
After surrendering, Graves was taken to Reston Hospital and treated for minor injuries that police said did not occur during the incident.
He was then transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.
Graves has been charged with abduction, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm in an occupied building, all felonies.
Police closed a segment of Herndon Parkway during the incident that has since reopened.
