Metro Announces Opening Date for Silver Line Extension

Six new stations, including the Dulles Airport stop, open on November 15.

By Amy Ayres October 31, 2022 at 3:07 pm

The light at the end of the tunnel is finally, fully in sight: The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority says the Silver Line extension — with its six new stations — will open for business on Tuesday, November 15.

The new stations include Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center, Washington Dulles International Airport, Loudoun Gateway, and Ashburn. On opening day, Metro teams will be handing out commemorative pennants to riders.

The 23-mile extension, which has hit many delays along the way to its completion, is the biggest expansion of Metrorail since it first opened in 1976.

Metro has been testing the tracks and trains, and training staff at the stations, for the last 18 weeks. The opening will be just in time to connect Dulles Airport to the line for the busy Thanksgiving travel week. Metro says that station is connected to the airport’s baggage claim area by a five-minute way through an underground tunnel.
