As of Friday morning, Virginia had 95,867 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 8,183 people hospitalized, 2,299 deaths and 1,191,304 people tested. Fairfax has the highest total number of cases, with 16,087 to date, with 1,913 hospitalized and 527 deaths. Arlington has reported 3,013 cases with 436 hospitalized and 135 deaths. Alexandria has 2,887 cases with 274 hospitalized and 60 deaths. Loudoun County has 5,150 cases with 342 hospitalized and 115 deaths and Prince William County has 11,294 cases (including Manassas and Manassas City), with 964 hospitalized and 204 deaths. Maryland reported 93,005 cases, Virginia reported 95,867 and Washington, DC reported 12,518. The death toll has reached a total of 6,301, with 3,415 in Maryland, 2,299 in Virginia and 587 in DC. Last week, new claims for unemployment benefits filed by Northern Virginia residents fell to their lowest level since the pandemic began, the Virginia Employment Commission reported Thursday evening. While many residents remain unemployed across the region, and the overall unemployment rate stays at an all-time high, first-time claims from the region for the week ending Aug. 1 were 4,392, down 44% from the week before. In Maryland, numbers on the coronavirus pandemic are starting to steady, with the exception of Ocean City. Statistics released Thursday afternoon reveal that the statewide seven-day average is now at 4.03%, the lowest level since the pandemic began. In Worcester County though, where Ocean City is located, the number of positive cases has risen this past week, nearly doubling since July 31 to 6.5%. Plus, the data shows that 56% of the day’s new cases in Maryland are typically younger than 40. (WTOP)

Researchers warned Thursday evening that the U.S. death toll could climb to nearly 300,000 by December—nearly doubling the current tally. Although, if 95% of people nationwide wear masks in public, approximately 66,000 U.S. lives could be saved, according to the statement. (The Washington Post)
