There are currently 17,322,041 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, around the world and 4,495,224 confirmed cases across the country. As of Friday morning, Virginia had 88,904 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 7,786 people hospitalized, 2,141 deaths and 1,091,615 people tested. Fairfax has the highest total number of cases, with 15,606 to date, with 1,872 hospitalized and 519 deaths. Arlington has reported 2,874 cases with 433 hospitalized and 135 deaths. Alexandria has 2,779 cases with 266 hospitalized and 57 deaths. Loudoun County has 4,985 cases with 331 hospitalized and 109 deaths and Prince William County has 10,875 cases (including Manassas and Manassas City), with 938 hospitalized and 196 deaths. The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, tallied in at 188,138 in the DMV on Friday morning. Maryland reported 87,177 cases, Virginia reported 88,904 and Washington, DC reported 12,057. The death toll has reached a total of 6,082, with 3,357 in Maryland, 2,141 in Virginia and 584 in DC. On the afternoon of Thursday, July 30, Washington, DC announced it would have an all-virtual star to the school year in an effort to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. As of press time, the plan is for all grades from pre-K through 12th grade to continue virtually until Nov. 6. (WTOP)
Statewide
After a months-long closure stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, Busch Gardens in Williamsburg has announced it will open in a limited format in August for a special event called “Coasters and Craft Brews.” On select dates next month, Busch Gardens will host outdoor gatherings that feature barbecue, samples from local and craft breweries and several roller coaster attractions. In a press release, the park said it will operate with enhanced health and safety protocols in place and will require temperature screenings upon entry. (Inside NoVA)

Thursday, July 30 marked the fourth consecutive day that the United States reported more than 1,000 coronavirus-related fatalities, bringing the nationwide death toll above 150,000. While new infections have started to level off in some of the hardest -hit states, there were still nearly 70,000 new cases reported nationwide. Plus, a new study came out by JAMA Pediatrics that raises concerts around children and how they react to the novel coronavirus. According to the study, children may carry as much of the coronavirus in their respiratory systems as adults, despite experiencing milder symptoms. (The Washington Post)
