As of Tuesday morning, Virginia had 86,072 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 7,5647 people hospitalized, 2,082 deaths and 1,036,010 people tested. Fairfax has the highest total number of cases, with 15,455 to date, with 1,855 hospitalized and 517 deaths. Arlington has reported 2,823 cases with 431 hospitalized and 135 deaths. Alexandria has 2,735 cases with 266 hospitalized and 57 deaths. Loudoun County has 4,914 cases with 327 hospitalized and 106 deaths and Prince William County has 10,641 cases (including Manassas and Manassas City), with 935 hospitalized and 194 deaths. The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, tallied in at 182,806 in the DMV on Tuesday morning. Maryland reported 84,876 cases, Virginia reported 86,072 and Washington, DC reported 11,858. The death toll has reached a total of 5,975, with 3,315 in Maryland, 2,082 in Virginia and 582 in DC. Statewide
Small businesses and nonprofit organizations whose normal operations were disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic are now eligible for a $70 million grant fund, Gov. Ralph Northam announced July 27. A new recovery fund titled Rebuild VA will offer grants of up to $10,000 to about 7,000 applicants to cover eligible expenses. Organizations that qualify for the grant include food and beverage establishments, exercise and fitness centers, nonessential retail outlets, entertainment and public amusement venues, personal care and personal grooming services, overnight summer camps and private campgrounds too. Statewide
High school sports in the state of Virginia are officially canceled until at least mid-December, as of the evening of July 27. The traditional fall sports season, which usually includes football, cheerleading and volleyball, will be delayed until at least February 2021. The Virginia High School League came to this decision as many school districts announced plans to start the upcoming school year virtually to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. (WTOP)
National
Senate Republicans have officially unveiled a proposed $1 trillion coronavirus relief bill, which would temporarily reduce emergency unemployment benefits from $600 to $200 a week, while also authorizing a second round of $1,200 stimulus checks. The relief bill comes at a time when over 1,000 new fatalities were recorded overnight, raising the U.S. coronavirus death toll to more than 145,000. (The Washington Post)
