Virginia enters phase three today; Gov. Northam closes bars

Northern Virginia’s daily update on COVID-19 and how it’s impacting the region.

There are currently 10,499,833 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, around the world and 2,636,538 confirmed cases across the country. The global total number of deaths stands at 511,860, and the United States’ at 127,425. Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University has been keeping up-to-date information through an interactive map.

As of Wednesday morning, Virginia had 62,787 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 6,203 people hospitalized, 1,763 deaths and 642,371 people tested. Fairfax has the highest total number of cases, with 13,850 to date, with 1,613 hospitalized and 488 deaths. Arlington has reported 2,479 cases with 418 hospitalized and 132 deaths. Alexandria has 2,325 cases with 238 hospitalized and 57 deaths. Loudoun County has 4,000 cases with 275 hospitalized and 87 deaths and Prince William County has 9,113 cases (including Manassas and Manassas City), with 799 hospitalized and 166 deaths. Regional
The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, tallied in at 140,673 in the DMV on Wednesday morning. Maryland reported 67,559 cases, Virginia reported 62,787 and Washington, DC reported 10,327. The death toll has reached a total of 5,376, with 3,062 in Maryland, 1,763 in Virginia and 551 in DC. Just one day before the commonwealth was to enter phase three of the “Forward Virginia” reopening plan, Gov. Ralph Northam announced that bars and restaurant bars would not be permitted to reopen fully. Instead, bars are able to continue operating under phase two restrictions. (WTOP)

Attorney General Mark Herring on Tuesday said he has successfully defended Virginia’s “mask or face-covering requirement” against a legal challenge brought by a Fauquier County winery owner, according to InsideNoVA. Philip Carter Strother brought the suit on behalf of Philip Carter Winery, challenging Gov. Ralph Northam’s ability to order the use of face coverings, and claiming the order conflicted with the criminal statute barring the wearing of a mask in public “with the intent to conceal his identity.” (InsideNoVA) 

Local
Loudoun County Public Schools has announced two options for school in the fall: Parents can either send their students to locations for a portion of every week, or they can keep their children home for full-time distance learning. Parents and teachers must indicate their preference by July 13. (The Washington Post)

National
Seven-day averages of new infections are higher than they were a week ago in 45 states across the country, according to reports on Tuesday. Six states are also shattering previously set records, including Texas, Arizona, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Idaho and Alaska. (The Washington Post)
