As of Thursday morning, Virginia had 52,177 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 5,272 people hospitalized, 1,514 deaths and 395,972 people tested. Fairfax has the highest total number of cases, with 12,746 to date, with 1,451 hospitalized and 422 deaths. Arlington has reported 2,280 cases with 394 hospitalized and 121 deaths. Alexandria has 2,125 cases with 216 hospitalized and 47 deaths. Loudoun County has 3,180 cases with 196 hospitalized and 67 deaths and Prince William County has 7,998 cases (including Manassas and Manassas City), with 683 hospitalized and 136 deaths. The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, tallied in at 121,179 in the DMV on Thursday morning. Maryland reported 59,465 cases, Virginia reported 52,177 and Washington, DC reported 9,537. The death toll has reached a total of 4,732, with 2,719 in Maryland, 1,514 in Virginia and 499 in DC. Local
Following Memorial Day celebrations, several states have seen an uptick in coronavirus cases this month, but as of yet, the DMV has not. According to numbers compiled by WTOP, there has been a drop in the seven-day average of new cases in DC, Maryland and Virginia since the holiday. As Northern Virginia moves into phase two of reopening Friday, June 12, day care centers will be allowed to open their doors as well, while following a long list of health regulations. Procedures include temperature checks, questionnaires, social distancing measures and more. (WTOP)
In sports news, the Washington Capitals have announced that they will resume small-group practices at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Ballston; however, the facility will remain closed to the public. (ARL Now)
Statewide
The average number of COVID-19 cases in Northern Virginia has continued to decline, yet the ongoing effects of the virus—including closures and event cancellations—have continued, with the Hylton Performing Arts Center being the latest to cancel all in-person performances this fall. The school released a statement June 10, explaining that the center felt canceling all professional performances for the upcoming season would be best for the health and safety of staff and patrons. President Trump announced Wednesday that he will resume campaign rallies in the coming weeks, many of which will take place in states currently battling new surges of COVID-19 infections, according to The Washington Post. Across the United States, professional golf has returned with no fans; Federal Reserve leaders are predicting a slow recovery for the economy, with unemployment falling to 9.3% by the end of this year and to 6.5% by the end of 2021; and the USDA has expanded school meal programs through the summer, in an effort to give children access to food during this trying time. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development issued a report June 10, in which it said, “The global economy is now experiencing the deepest recession since the Great Depression in the 1930s.” According to data from the U.N., the economy is projected to shrink by at least 6% by the end of 2020. Plus, a new study released by researchers at Cambridge and Greenwich universities revealed that if everyone wears masks in public, it may stop a second wave of infections without requiring lockdowns.
