Blood supplies critically low in DC region; Metro ridership lowest since 2000

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Thursday, March 7.

By Editorial March 7, 2019 at 8:29 am

According to Inova Blood Donor Services, blood supplies in the metro DC area are critically low. Inova supports 90 percent of the area’s hospitals, and says that seven out of the eight blood types are needed currently. (WTOP)

New data by the Metro shows ridership dropped to less than 600,000 every weekday from July-December 2018. This is the lowest ridership since 2000, and correlates to the major maintenance shutdowns on Metro lines during that time frame. (NBC Washington)

The Virginia General Assembly recently approved $2.3 million to help initiate the design of a STEM-focused science center in Northern Virginia, which will be an extension of the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond. (InsideNoVA)

The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission is set to discuss the next steps of how to spend the toll money from Interstate 395, which will begin in October, and from Interstate 66 (its tolls have been underway for over a year). The money could potentially fund improvements to Metrobus services, the Fairfax Connector or Loudoun County Transit Commuter Bus services. (WTOP)
