Unemployment across Virginia drops to lowest since 2007; Mega Millions jackpot reaches record $1.6B

Unemployment across Virginia has dropped down to 2.9 percent in September, according to Gov. Ralph Northam. That is the third consecutive month that saw a decline in unemployment and the lowest since June 2007.

There was no winner in the Mega Millions jackpot drawing last Friday, Oct. 19, bringing the jackpot for Tuesday to a record $1.6 billion. Though no one won the jackpot, two tickets sold in Virginia won $1 million and a ticket purchased in Leesburg won $20,000.

Police have arrested a suspect after allegedly making threats against two schools in Manassas on Instagram. There is expected to be increased police presence on both campuses on Monday as a result.

The Virginia Department of Transportation are instituting new designs for the Interstate 66 toll lanes currently under construction, including an update to the Nutley Street interchange. The new design would feature two traffic circles on either side of the bridge that carries Nutley Street over I-66.

On Sunday, firefighters responded to a fire at a condo building in Rosslyn. The fire took place in an upper floor apartment of a four-story residential building on the 1400 block of N. Rhodes Street. No injuries have been reported, while at least one lower level unit suffered water damage.
