Amazon raises minimum wage to $15 per hour; D.C. council members to vote on Airbnb restrictions

As of Nov. 1, Amazon’s minimum wage for full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal employees will be set at $15 per hour.

Tuesday, Washington, D.C. council members will vote on Airbnb legislation that the short-term rental company says are, with the exception of those in New York and San Francisco, some of the toughest restrictions in the United States. Airbnb critics argue that Airbnbs “disrupt neighborhoods,” prevent affordable rental housing and threaten the hotel industry.

Five years ago, Fredericksburg native Sgt. Richard Kutch, an Army medic who served in Afghanistan and worked at Walter Reed National Medical Center, took his own life. His wife, Carina, will visit his grave at Arlington National Cemetery during the Oct. 28 Marine Corps Marathon.

Thursday, the Fairfax County Planning Commission will vote on whether Angelo, Gordon & Co. will be permitted to transform a 4.3-acre office property at the southwest corner of Reston Parkway and Sunrise Valley Drive into a 145-unit residential and office space called Reston Corner.

This winter, Virginia legislators are expected to discuss stricter pedestrian protection laws, which would require drivers to stop for those crossing the street. Currently, the law only requires that cars yield to people crossing roads where the speed limit is below 35 mph.
