Flash flood warning to last through late Monday night; RTC West expansion gets approved by Fairfax County Planning Commission

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Monday, Sept. 17.

Starting at 10 a.m. and lasting through late Monday night, a flash flood warning will be in effect as rain from Hurricane Florence comes to the area.

Thursday, the Fairfax County Planning Commission approved plans for the RTC West expansion, which will add more than 500 multifamily units and 700,000 square feet of office space. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will vote next on Sept. 25.

Thursday, the State Board of Elections will vote on Loudoun County’s request to implement a test software that would email ballots to absentee voters, then track the voter’s progress—receiving the ballot, printing it and sending it back.

Saturday, a female was flown to a burn center after an incident in Herndon involving a vape pen. Details of the incident as well as the woman’s condition has not been released.

The Friends of Arlington Public Library is giving $5,369 to the University of Puerto Rico’s Águedo Mojica Marrero Library, which was damaged by Hurricane Maria. Arlington Public Library will host a panel on Puerto Rico on Sept. 20 from 7-9 p.m.

The Environmental Protection Agency discourages people to come into contact with Lake Audubon and Lake Thoreau as algea blooms Microcystis and Plankothrix, respectively, have been found there. Both blooms produce toxins that can be harmful to humans and other wildlife.

Arlington Independent Media is holding technology classes for seniors on Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. Classes will address smartphone use, social media and internet literacy.
