Arlington National Cemetery names drive after a woman; Arlington School Board encourages judge to dismiss lawsuit against Washington-Lee HS renaming

Within Arlington National Cemetery’s newest section, opening Thursday, will be a drive named after Ida Lewis, who saved at least one dozen mariners in Rhode Island’s Newport harbor. Lewis, the heroine of Lime Rock Lighthouse, is the first woman to have a drive named after her by Arlington National Cemetery.

The Arlington School Board is asking a judge to throw out a lawsuit filed by three current students who are arguing against Washington-Lee High School being renamed. Thursday, the school board plans on appointing members to a renaming committee, and aims to vote on a new name in December.

Three people, one woman and two juveniles, were found dead in a Herndon home in the 1000 block of Safa Street on Wednesday. The Fairfax County Police Department believes the deaths may be the result of a domestic-related incident.

A June court ruling found that 11 Virginia districts were unconstitutionally gerrymandered, and demanded the districts be redrawn by Oct. 30. But the Republican speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates filed an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday claiming that the districts are constitutional.

For the first time in its 34-year history, the Army Ten-Miler will change its course due to construction on the Arlington Memorial Bridge.

Through a pilot program with the Fairfax County Government, pedal-assist e-bikes, which will help users get uphill more easily, are coming to Reston’s Capital Bikeshare fleet. Capital Bikeshare members can use the bikes are no additional cost.

Charlottesville resident Jeffrey Winder was charged with assault and battery, caught on camera hitting Jason Kessler, a Unite the Right rally organizer. Winder was facing a jail sentence of up to 12 months and $2,500 in fines, but was only given a fine of $1.
