Prepare to see George Washington Parkway delays; 11 Arlington elementary schools to see boundary changes

Rehabilitation of the Windy Run Bridge began this morning, causing only three (one northbound, one southbound and one reversible depending on rush hour) George Washington Parkway lanes to be open. Drivers should expect this, plus a 35 mph speed limit, until sometime this fall.

Due to the debut of Alice West Fleet Elementary School next year, 11 other elementary schools (Abingdon, Arlington Science Focus, Ashlawn, Barcroft, Drew, Henry, Hoffman-Boston, Long Branch, Oakridge, Randolph and Taylor) will have their boundaries redrawn, Arlington Public Schools announced on Friday.

Friday, Ku Klux Klan flyers were once again found in Loudoun County. After a Sterling resident alerted police of a flyer in a bag with birdseed found in the 1600 block of North Amelia Avenue, officers found more than 20 others in the area.

Saturday, the Dulles DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel hosted descendants of American officers held prisoner in a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp called Oflag 64 in Szubin, Poland during WWII. The descendants came together to discuss how they could raise money to restore Building 9, a former prison barracks, into a museum.

The Maryland congressional delegation has nominated Wendi Winters, a Capital Gazette reporter who attempted to stop a gunman by charging at him with a trash can and a recycling bin, for the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Winters and four others were killed by Jarrod Ramos, set to appear in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court on Monday.
