National Park Service approves Jason Kessler’s ‘Unite the Right’ anniversary rally request; Verizon outages impacting 911 calls

Jason Kessler’s request for a “white civil rights” rally to take place on Aug. 12, the anniversary of the Charlottesville “Unite the Right” rally, across from the White House has been approved by the National Park Service. A permit has not yet been issued, however.

A regional Verizon outage affecting the city of Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William counties is causing problems for those needing 911 assistance. Those affected are being encouraged to use text-to-911 or use another service provider.

Giant hogweed, an invasive plant that can grow to more than 15 feet high and whose sap can cause burns if not immediately washed off, has been spotted in Berryville, a part of Clarke County. The plant, which looks like cow parsnip and Queen Anne’s Lace, is rare, so it is unlikely that the plant will be spotted in many other places. It is believed that the plants were intentionally planted in the 1970s by a now deceased landowner.
