Wakefield High School social studies teacher Michelle Cottrell-Williams was named a top eight finalist in the Virginia Teacher of the Year competition yesterday. If Cottrell-Williams is named Virginia Teacher of the Year on Sept. 18, she will then be entered into the National Teacher of the Year competition.

A 4-year-old girl traveling from Winchester to Colonial Beach with two adults and two other children was shot in the upper body by a 2-year-old boy that she was travelling with. While stopped at Quarles Truck Stop near Opal, the children were left unrestrained and unsupervised, at which time the 2-year-old boy grabbed and accidentally discharged an unsecured firearm.

Twenty-eight dogs and 16 cats were rescued from Florida by the Prince William County Humane Society. Over the next few weeks, the animals will be treated and prepped for adoption, housed at either the Prince William County Animal Shelter or the Humane Society headquarters and adoption center in Dumfries.

Reston 20/20, Reclaim Reston and the Reston Citizens Association are hosting a forum on Wednesday, Sept. 20, to discuss Fairfax County’s proposal to increase the density cap from 13 to 16 people per acre in Reston’s Planned Residential Community district.
