Counties host 9/11 remembrance ceremonies; 5.7 million Florida residents without power

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Monday, Sept. 11.

Today marks 16 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks. In remembrance of those 184 people who died when the Pentagon was struck at 9:37 a.m., Arlington County will hold ceremonies at its plaza and county courthouse with a moment of silence recognizing when the building was hit. There will also be a 10 a.m. tribute with a bell ringing ceremony in Old Town Alexandria’s Market Square today.

At 9 a.m. today, 22 Prince William County residents who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center will be remembered at a ceremony held at the Liberty Memorial.

Verizon is sponsoring a Recycling Rally in Ashburn’s Quantum Park parking lot from 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. this Thursday, Sept. 14. This is Verizon’s seventh time holding a Recycling Rally in Ashburn, where participants can get rid of items like TV remotes, computers and toaster ovens in addition to the traditional aluminum, glass, paper and plastic recyclables.
