Springtime means a new cycle of NoVA insects. Many know that pest control companies come out to houses every three to six months to spray bug repellent, but there are other methods for keeping critters out of your home using ingredients that you may already have around the house.

Dr. Valeria Birch, a naturopathic doctor, says to figure out why the bugs are coming and keep the area clean. This means finding where the insects are getting in and making it inaccessible for them to come through. Other than keeping your house clean, look for cracks in sealant, holes in odd places, standing water and improper sealing of food.

People like the convenience of an all-in-one solution such as routine sprays, but in this case it won’t work, according to Birch. She argues that because it is part of the natural cycle for bugs, they will continue to appear despite human efforts. There are natural solutions people can use that are cheap and effective when it comes to preventing to common pests in Northern Virginia.

Boric acid: Use 2 tablespoons of boric acid and 2 cups of sugar for every 1 cup of water. Then mix the solution in a spray bottle. This treatment is effective against silverfish and cockroaches, which are abundant in the summer months. Preferring damp and dark areas, they are most commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms. Highly toxic to these critters, boric acid is harmless to humans and pets.

Apple cider vinegar: This added with water is a handy repellant for spiders, ants, gnats and flies. Attracted by the sweetness of the apple aroma, these pests are done for when they consume the vinegar. Use this solution to clean off countertops.

If you aren’t into sprays, you can always use houseplants. Rosemary, lavender and peppermint plants are known to deter bugs and also add a nice aroma to your home.
