On the Market: The Oldest Remaining Original Structure on Caroline Street in Fredericksburg

The 261-year-old home has backyard views of the Rappahannock River and George Washington’s childhood home.

There’s a story behind every historic home. For 213 Caroline Street in Fredericksburg, its story predates the Revolutionary War. It also includes an interesting connection to George Washington. The home, which was built in 1764, belonged to Dr. Charles Mortimer. Mortimer was Fredericksburg’s first mayor and the physician to Mary Ball Washington, the first president’s mother.

The 5,325-square-foot Georgian-style brick estate’s walls also tell the history of the 1.2-acre property. Original flooring, accents, and craftsmanship can still be found in many of the rooms throughout the home. The historic home features five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and more than 5,325 square feet. It is currently listed for $3.195 million.

One thing you won’t find in this historic home is a lack of color. As you enter the living room, you’ll be met with a bright shade of blue, which helps bring out all of the hidden details in the crown molding and fireplace.

The grand paneled parlor is one of the rooms that has remained “virtually untouched” for the last 260 years. The all-white walls and fireplace mantel perfectly contrast the original heart of pine flooring and light blue ceilings. The window seats, which are positioned throughout the home, will become a go-to for afternoon reading sessions and bird watching.

Dinner parties and holiday meals will look picture-perfect in this historic dining room. The fireplace will help set the ambiance for the night. Plus, you can keep your special dinnerware close by in the original built-in China cabinet.

Toward the back of the house is the gourmet kitchen. This rear addition ensures you’ll have all the appliances, space, and technology to cook meals on the daily.

Also a part of the sun-filled addition is the family room. The wall of windows provides amazing views of both sunsets and the Rappahannock River. During the winter months, the fireplace will act as a cozy backdrop.

The property also comes with a one-bedroom guest house. Inside, there’s a sitting room with a fireplace, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom, making it a private option for any guest.

The home at 213 Caroline St., Fredericksburg is listed by Jeff Wilson and Christopher Owens at TTR Sotheby’s International Realty.
