The holiday season is quickly approaching, and your guest bedroom is about to kick into high gear. From Thanksgiving through each of the December holidays and even the New Year, you may have family and friends visiting. If you’re fortunate to have a space to host them in your own home, you want the experience to rival any five-star hotel in town.
“I always encourage my clients to think about the guest experience, especially around the holidays. It should feel like a cozy retreat, and with a few simple updates, you can create a space that’s both stylish and inviting,” says Asha Maxey, principal interior designer at Asha Maía Design.
Maxey says she believes in both refreshing the décor and adding a festive touch for small but impactful changes that give your home an updated look for the season, and here are six of her best guest bedroom decor tips.
Give the Bedding a Layered, Cozy Look
Getting into a bed that’s beautifully made is one of the most delightful indulgences, particularly when the temperature drops. Maxey says, “Swap out your lightweight summer bedding for cozy layers. Start with crisp, fresh sheets, add a warm duvet, and throw in a couple of blankets for that extra touch of warmth,” she says.
Add Seasonal Pillows
Changing out your accent and throw pillows is one of the easiest ways to usher in a new season. You can store pillow covers with your linens in the off-season, then bring out the warm colors, holiday-inspired tartans and prints, and natural touches as soon as there is a chill in the air. “Incorporating a mix of soft fabrics like velvet or wool helps create a rich, layered look perfect for colder weather,” Maxey says.
Put Festive Florals in the Room
Seasonal florals aren’t just for your tablescapes. Maxey recommends putting festive florals in your guest bedroom for an organic, welcoming touch. “Switch out any spring or summer florals for more seasonally appropriate foliage or even holiday greenery. A simple vase of eucalyptus, fall foliage, pine branches, or berries instantly brings a seasonal touch to the room,” says Maxey.
Incorporate a Twinkle of Lights
You’re never too old for the magic of holiday lights, and finding them in the bedroom is the most nostalgic surprise for your guests. “Drape warm holiday lights over the headboard or even place a small Christmas tree in the corner to add a touch of festive cheer. It’s a subtle yet charming way to bring the holiday spirit into the room,” she says.
Light a Seasonal Scent
“Light a holiday-scented candle or two in the room with scents like cinnamon, pine, or spices to create an inviting and warm and cozy atmosphere for your guests,” says Maxey. You can also include a room spray on the dresser or add fresh greenery for a seasonal fragrance.
Create a Comfort Station
There’s nothing better than getting cozy when the weather is frightful. Create a comfort station that has all the soft textures and warm layers a guest could want. “Place a basket with fuzzy slippers, extra pillows, and soft throws near the bed. Guests will love having those little comforts at arm’s reach,” she says.
