How to Give Your Bathroom a Revamp in a Weekend

Changing just a few things in your bathroom can make it feel a lot different, and it doesn’t have to break the bank.

Home renovations can cost a lot if you tear down walls or move the fixtures. But for those looking to give the bathroom a face-lift, you don’t need a professional or a lot of money for a revamp.

All you need is a creative mindset and a little elbow grease.

In just a weekend, you could channel your inner Joanna Gaines and make some changes that will essentially give you a new bathroom by Monday.

Start with the Walls

Starting with the obvious gamechanger: a new paint job.

Repainting a room is one of the easiest ways to update a space. Doing so can create either a subtle or a dramatic change.

“You could choose a dark, moody color. You could paint the ceiling. Or if the vanity is a color you don’t like, you could even paint the cabinetry of the vanity itself,” says Ana Djevenica, interior designer with Total Home Design & Remodeling in Springfield.

If you are an experienced do-it-yourself-er, you can even create a show-stopping bathroom, just by hanging wallpaper on the walls.

“Wallcoverings can create depth and texture and give the room a whole new dimension,” says Djevenica. “Just make sure you use water-resistant wallpaper, such as vinyl.”

Lighting Up the Space

Lighting is another simple way to bring change to your bathroom.

Most bathrooms have a fan and light combination. You could start with updating your fan light, suggests Djevenica.

The lighting near the vanity is another area where you can make a change.

“Be creative and choose something out of the norm or fancy,” says Djevenica. “This can really help elevate the look of your bathroom.”

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Replacing the bathroom mirror will alter the look and feel of the room.

“This is especially simple if you have a hanging mirror that can be easily updated with a more chic mirror that will make a statement in the room,” Djevenica says.

However, if the mirror is glued to the wall, you may need to do a small drywall repair after you replace it.

“Go all in,” says Djevenica. “Select something with a funky frame or shape, or in an unexpected color.”

Details Matter

Cabinetry hardware is another small detail that can create a big difference, Djevenica says.

“That is something I always consider when I’m designing a bathroom, especially one that guests will be using. You want to choose something that will catch their eye and make them say, ‘I love your hardware. Where did you get it?’ It makes all the difference and there are tons of finishes to choose from.”

Bath accessories, such astowel bars, toilet paper holders, and even doorknobs can be easily updated without much trouble.

Finish It Off with Décor

In addition to the more cosmetic changes, you can always give your bathroom a new look by upgrading your towels, shower curtains, bath rugs, countertop décor, and even art on the wall.

“I think we all can agree that we all keep our linens for way longer than we should,” says Djevenica. “And even updating something as simple as switching up your shower rings can be a nice change.”
