Tired of having to travel into D.C. or farther to see new surrealist and non-traditional art? Come to Epicure Café in Fairfax this coming Saturday from 7 p.m. to midnight and check out some local artists that are attempting to break the mold of suburban life. Named for the legendary Bunnyman of Clifton, The Bunnyman Bridge Collective is comprised of local artists Jason Davis, Jessica Kallista and Javier Padilla.
According to legend, the “Bunnyman” was a grown man dressed in a full rabbit costume who tried to scare away (with a hatchet) those who were tearing down the woods he called home when suburban Fairfax was first being developed in the late 1960s. Judging by the amount of apartments and townhouses in Fairfax now, the Bunnyman did not succeed in scaring away the developers, but it is said that he still haunts the “Bunnyman Bridge”, or Colchester Overpass, in Clifton.
The Bunnyman Bridge Collective embraces the “weird Suburbia” aspect of the legend of the Bunnyman and seeks to “disrupt the surrender to homogeneity of manicured lawns and living rooms decorated with art that does nothing more than match the sofa” with its own brand of experimental art.
Epicure Café is hosting the opening reception for The Collective’s first show, “Tell Me Something“, and will have the artwork on display from April 5 through May 13. Come out and meet the artists, see a live unveiling of the works and enjoy music from local dream pop band Kid Claws.
