Smoke is universal. Some of the most appealing bites across the globe profit from it in a major way, and in the case of enviable barbecue, the South extends far beyond the continental U.S. Here are some of our favorite barbecue spots around NoVA that bring smoke from the South.
Lechonera DMV
The team here met while attending Johnson & Wales University in Miami, a sign that foreshadows the cheffed-up takes on Puerto Rican barbecue served here. The marquee item is the lechon, or suckling pig, so arrive early to make sure that there’s still tender pork to be enjoyed. Occoquan Commuter Parking Lot: 1325 Old Bridge Rd., Woodbridge
Tortilleria Sol de Dia
Tendrils of smoke curl around the parking lot of this tortilla maker. Talk to the friendly gentlemen who man the grill to make an excuse to ogle their Mexican pollo asado as they flip it along with tender ribs. Head inside to grab everything you need, from sauce to beans, to assemble a meal. 8909 Centreville Rd., Manassas
Jules Caribbean BBQ
Suriname native Jules Foeaman has made Loudoun County home to his smoky oeuvre since 2009. The menu changes by the day, but the long-marinated ribs, which cling admirably to the bone, are almost always a presence. Sweet sautéed cabbage is a standout side, as is the yellow rice. 40636 Charles Town Pk., Paeonian Springs
