Editor’s Note: 1947 is now Tamarind Indian Cuisine, with new owners, but the same kitchen staff
Forget everything you know about those dreaded Indian buffets where everything looks and tastes the same. At this pretty dining room run by the team behind Curry Mantra (Fairfax) and London Curry House (Alexandria), lunchtime brings a chorus line of nuanced dishes like a bubbling pan of chickpeas served with triangles of puffed dough, an alluring and juicy chicken biryani and tender goat curry. The staff allows diners from the same table to partake in the buffet while others order from the extensive a la carte menu, the latter option admittedly more luxurious feeling since these arrive in gorgeous silver-toned dishes and bowls. When the menu lists an item as must-try, go ahead and listen. Be rewarded with such gems as the tawa chicken tikka, a dish of marinated chicken heavily spiced and perfectly crispy, and Delhi ki Nehari, marinated and spiced lamb braised with caramelized onions.
