Fredericksburg Is Getting a Trader Joe’s

The company has confirmed that plans for a new location are in the works.

Fredericksburg’s grocery scene could be expanding. Nakia Rohde, a public relations manager for Trader Joe’s, confirmed to the Fredericksburg Free Press that there are “plans for a Trader Joe’s store in Fredericksburg.”

Rohde did not specify a location or timeline. However, the Fredericksburg Free Press reported that a potential site plan for the store was submitted to the City of Fredericksburg for review.

The piece of land is a portion of the 34-acre property that runs between Cowan Boulevard and Fall Hill Avenue. The plan is part of the commercial section of the Shops at Fall Hill. It shows a 13,085-square-foot grocery store, which is consistent with the footprint of a Trader Joe’s.

Plans for the overall development also show a new road between Cowan Boulevard and Fall Hill Avenue that would connection the two major corridors.

Trader Joe’s currently operates 11 NoVA locations, including in Alexandria, Fairfax, Reston, Falls Church, and Ashburn.

Insider Tips

Northern Virginia Magazine food critic Alice Levitt offers these insider tips for Trader Joe’s shoppers:

Shop For: Scoop up elegantly frenched bone-in pork chops, flavorful international freezer finds, and of course, the low-cost Charles Shaw–label wines (formerly known as Two-Buck Chuck).

International Flair: You can buy many ingredients typically found in ethnic markets all in one place here — think gochujang, chile crisp, balsamic vinegar, and truffle oil. Don’t miss the wide selection of cheeses and inexpensive fresh flowers.

Downside: Though you might find some unusual options like Cape gooseberries, the produce section is notably smaller than at many other stores. Some stores have dauntingly packed parking lots, too.
