Devils Backbone to Partner with Department of Wildlife Resources to Help Remove Invasive Plant

The Virginia-based brewery will financially contribute to the restoration of the James River Wildlife Management Area.

Virginia-based Devils Backbone Brewing Company has announced a three-year partnership with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources to support the restoration of the James River Wildlife Management Area.

Over the next three years, the brewery will contribute $33,000 to DWR to assist with the clearing of Autumn Olive. This invasive shrub is fast-growing and spreads rapidly, and it poses a threat to other native plant species in the region.

The first two years will include mechanical spraying and treating of the area, followed by a controlled burn in the area to get rid of invasive plants and allow new growth to come back in its place. In spring 2026, there will be an effort to plant native wildflowers in the area.

“DWR is excited about this multi-year partnership with Devils Backbone and their dedication to restoring and preserving Virginia’s wild places,” said DWR Executive Director Ryan Brown. “By investing in habitat restoration at the James River WMA, Devils Backbone is supporting a healthy ecosystem for wildlife and an enjoyable experience for visitors.”

The James River Wildlife Management area spans 1,213 acres of land that surrounds the James River. Visitors to the area are welcome to fish, hunt, and canoe in the area.

Founded in 2008, Devils Backbone is headquartered in Roseland, with outposts in Lexington and Charlottesville. It produces several popular brews that can be found in retail stores, including its flagship Vienna Lager.
