5 upcoming cooking and baking classes for kids

Are your children interested in learning how to cook? Sign them up for these fun and creatives classes.

The basics of cooking and baking are used throughout a lifetime. Help your kids get off to the right start with these upcoming classes, below, where they’ll become more comfortable in the kitchen, all while having fun.

Cookie Decorating: Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies
Friday, Feb. 14, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
In this workshop, your child will learn how to make the perfect royal icing consistency, as well how to decorate Valentine’s Day designs on their cookies, including hearts, flowers, cupcakes and teddy bears. Available for students ages 10 and up, each participant will receive 10 pre-baked cookies to decorate and will get a box to take their treats home. // Fran’s Cake & Candy Supplies: 10927 Main St., Fairfax; $85

Family Fun: Valentine’s Day Sweets
Saturday, Feb. 15, 1 p.m.
Recommended for ages 7 and up, this family-friendly class will celebrate Valentine’s Day with heart-shaped shortbread cookies and chocolate-raspberry-filled cupcakes with white chocolate buttercream icing. Little sous chefs will mix the batter, bake the cupcakes and learn how to whip the buttercream, as well as practice cutting out the heart shapes in the shortbread. // Sur la Table: 1101 S. The Conche Presents: Mommy & Me Chocolate-Making Class
Monday, Feb. 17, 10 a.m.-noon
This mommy-and-me class is aimed at children ages 10 and up. Together, you and your child will learn how to make a seasonally themed chocolate sculpture. This class includes a welcome drink for you, and a hot chocolate for your kiddo. // The Conche: 1605 Village Market Blvd. SE, Leesburg; $50

Culinaria After School
Thursday, Feb. 20 and Thursday, Feb. 27, 5-7 p.m.
Aimed toward children ages 9 to 13, this introductory course teaches basic cooking skills, such as knife skills, cooking chicken, making biscuit dough and creating a vinaigrette and a custard. Each class teaches a full menu, and students may take one class in the series or all of them. // Culinaria Cooking School: 110 Pleasant St. NW, Vienna; $65

Young Chefs: Sushi
Saturday, Feb. 22, 2-4 p.m.
Let your little ones learn the ancient art of sushi making. Chef Jenna will guide the class, using Japanese methods. The menu includes a Philadelphia roll, California roll and a dessert fruit roll. This class is for ages 8 and up. // Cookology: 4238 Wilson Blvd., Suite 3110, Arlington; $55
