Fairfax County’s School Board unanimously approved a boundary plan for Skyview High School on Thursday. Located in Herndon, the new school is scheduled to open this fall. The new attendance boundaries are scheduled to take effect for the 2027–28 school year.
During the 2026–2027 school year, Skyview will consist of ninth and 10th grade students who opted-in to attend. The following school year, all ninth graders will be within the Skyview boundary, but students would have the option to opt out and attend their former high school. For the third school year, all students would be in-boundary. There would be no opt-out option, but students can still transfer.
Skyview High School will draw students from Westfield, Chantilly, and South Lakes high schools. The new boundaries will impact approximately 2,544 students: 420 middle school students and 2,124 high school students. It will reassign 333 Chantilly, 384 South Lakes, and 1,062 Westfield high school students to Skyview.
According to FCPS, the new scenario is projected to decrease Centreville High School capacity from 104% to 92%, Chantilly capacity from 110% to 87%, and South Lakes HS capacity from 99% to 88%.
Skyview’s History
FCPS purchased the 32-acre campus of the former King Abdullah Academy in Herndon last August for $150 million. The property features 355,000 square feet of modern educational spaces, large multipurpose halls, libraries, study rooms, fine arts facilities, and athletic spaces. The sale also included all of the furniture and equipment.
In February, the school board voted to name the school Skyview. Led by Principal Dave Jagels, it will offer the core curriculum found in other traditional FCPS high schools. Skyview will also provide three unique pathways: aerospace science; technology; and artificial intelligence and machine learning.
