University of Mary Washington Adds Virginia’s First Master’s Degree in AI in Business

The program is the first in Virginia to specialize in artificial intelligence and business.

The University of Mary Washington has officially begun enrollment for its new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence in Business program. It was approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in May.

The fully online, asynchronous program is the first in Virginia to concentrate on artificial intelligence in a business context. The degree combines AI technologies with business areas such as marketing, finance, operations, and strategy. It is designed for both working professionals and recent graduates.

“The MS in AI in Business is designed to equip students with the knowledge and applied skills to integrate AI technologies into organizational strategy, operations and innovation,” said UMW Provost Tim O’Donnell in a press release.

Students are able to study topics including machine learning, generative AI, predictive analytics, and data analysis. The curriculum emphasizes communication, ethical reasoning, and critical thinking to allow graduates to successfully navigate the challenges surrounding new technology.

AI and Liberal Arts

Mary Washington introduced the Center for AI and the Liberal Arts in the fall of 2025, focused on exploring AI in relation to fields within the humanities. Although not a degree program, the center offers courses, supports student and faculty research, and hosts public events.

The initiative aims to go beyond teaching AI to question why it matters, who it impacts, and how it can be used responsibly.
