Fairfax County Expands Montessori Model at Select Schools

FCPS is expanding the program to additional schools and will include some first graders starting in 2026–2027.

Fairfax County Public Schools is embracing the Montessori learning model in some schools. After launching a Montessori program this academic year, the district will expand its offerings to new schools in the 2026–2027 school year.

According to FCPS, its Montessori program “offers a student-centered, multi-age learning environment where students develop independence and critical thinking through hands-on exploration.”

The Montessori learning model was started in the early 20th century by Maria Montessori. The approach includes having children of multiple ages in one classroom. FCPS Montessori teachers will receive specialized training, especially in observation. “As they observe each student, the teacher applies this information to create lessons and activities that are presented in a unique way to the child’s educational needs and interests,” FCPS says.

FCPS’ Montessori Program

Fairfax County began offering the Montessori program in the West Potomac pyramid during the 2025–2026 school year. The program is currently offered in multi-age classrooms at the pre-K and kindergarten levels.

FCPS plans to expand the model to first grade in the 2026–2027 school year at Bucknell Elementary School. The program at Bucknell serves families in the West Potomac pyramid. This includes Belle View, Fort Hunt, Groveton, Hollin Meadows, Hybla Valley, Stratford Landing, and Waynewood elementary schools.

Also for 2026–2027, the school system will offer its Montessori program at Great Falls Elementary School. It will consist of multi-age classrooms of pre-K and kindergarten students. Eligibility is open to families in the Great Falls boundary and siblings of Great Falls immersion students. Residents of the Langley pyramid are also eligible, including Churchill Road, Colvin Run, Forestville, and Spring Hill.

Lottery and Information Sessions

Parents can apply to FCPS’ Montessori program through a lottery process. Lottery applications for the 2026–2027 school year are open for both the Bucknell and Great Falls Montessori programs. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis for available spots or waitlist placement.

FCPS is also hosting information sessions for parents interested in the Montessori program. Advance registration is required.
