Loudoun County school officials are considering several potential calendars for the 2028–2029 school year, including an option that would implement year-round classes.
In a school board meeting on Tuesday, April 28, chief human resources officer Lisa Boland presented five potential calendar options under consideration. The option to phase in a year-round school option would replace the traditional summer vacation with shorter, more frequent breaks spread throughout the year.
Under this scenario, the 2028–2029 school year would begin on August 10 and end on June 13. It would include two two-week breaks throughout the school year.
The following year would shift to a July 23 start and a June 14 end. Students would have three three-week breaks in 2029-30 during the fall, winter, and spring. This plan includes 180 instructional days and only federal holidays off.
Boland told the board that this would “create a more balanced calendar, reduce extended summer learning loss, and minimize disruption to traditional schedules,” Loudoun Now reported.
The calendar options remain in the exploratory phase. School officials will be gathering additional input from parents and community members before making a final decision.
