A proposed AI policy is heading to the Loudoun County School Board for review. The policy seeks to control the way students and teachers use artificial intelligence in the classroom. The policy passed the committee on curriculum and instruction last week and will now progress to the full school board.
Policy 5430 lays out guidelines for the kinds of AI usage that is acceptable in schools. These guidelines say only approved generative AI programs can be used in student instruction or to complete student work.
The AI policy also says that teachers should not rely solely on generative AI for grading, eligibility decisions, and course design without review. In addition, it prohibits sharing personally identifiable information with generative AI programs.
At a May 7 meeting, LCPS teacher Andrea Weiskopf raised concern over the lack of direction for transparency from students, Loudoun Now reported. It’s obvious that no one in here has ever been gaslit by a student pretending that they didn’t use AI,” Weiskopf said. “I am concerned that it says teachers are supposed to have transparency, but students are not. I would also like to see that students should only be using it under teacher direction.”
The committee added an amendment that would require students to disclose how and why they used AI in an assignment.
This school board says the policy will be reviewed annually to keep up with modern technology developments.
