Fairfax County’s School Boundary Review Process Enters Next Phase

FCPS has announced the next set of public meeting dates to discuss the proposed changes.

Fairfax County’s massive school boundary review process is entering its next phase. FCPS superintendent Michelle Reid emailed parents on May 7 that the first phase has been completed, and phase two is now beginning. Reid said the goal of the boundary review process, which began last year, is to “better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, student health and wellness, and evolving community needs.”

Phase One of School Boundary Review

During the first phase of the review process, FCPS gathered feedback at 12 community meetings. The county hired the firm Thru Consulting to collect and analyze meeting feedback, as well as the input received online and through email.

The Superintendent’s Boundary Review Advisory Committee then met multiple times to review the feedback and the early draft boundary scenarios for upcoming community meetings.

In her email, Reid stated that, “Families, staff, and other community members will soon be able to explore and visualize how these potential scenarios would affect boundaries by using a customized Boundary Explorer Tool. The tool will be accessible from our website.”

Phase Two of School Boundary Review

Reid invited parents to join the following community boundary review meetings:

  • Thursday, May 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Oakton High School
  • Friday, May 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Robinson Secondary School
  • Monday, May 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Herndon High School
  • Friday, May 23, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Lewis High School
  • Wednesday, May 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Annandale High School
  • Thursday, May 29, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Whitman Middle School
  • Friday, May 30, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Chantilly High School
  • Friday, June 6, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Glasgow Middle School

“This timing will allow you to review and reflect on the initial draft scenarios before the start of summer break. Another round of community meetings will be held in the fall,” Reid said.

The meetings will be both in-person and offered virtually through Zoom. Child care for in-person participants and language interpretation/translation will be available as needed, and registration links will be shared soon.
