Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology will soon have a new principal: Michael Mukai, the current principal of West Springfield High School and an alumnus of TJHSST’s very first class.
“As we continue the tradition of excellence at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, we are thrilled to have found a phenomenal leader who is also an alum,” said Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid.
Mukai began his career at FCPS in 1995 as a math and science teacher, and he has held several roles in the school system since then. He has been principal of WSHS since 2014.
Before he began his career as an educator, Mukai was a student at TJHSST in the inaugural class in 1985, when it first converted to a magnet STEM school.
“I am deeply honored to be named the next leader of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and will continue the legacy of excellence that shaped my own academic journey nearly 40 years ago,” Mukai said. “I am committed to ensuring every student here thrives academically, sharpens their critical thinking skills, and embraces innovation to navigate tomorrow’s challenges. I cannot wait to walk the halls again as principal!”
In his time at WSHS, Mukai’s accomplishments included gaining gold recognition from the College Board for the AP School Honor Roll; increased numbers of students recognized through the National Merit Scholarship program; and several school recognitions for theater, band, and athletics.
“Michael Mukai has a passion and a vision that is second to none. I am excited to see the amazing work he will do moving forward for excellence and opportunity,” Reid said.
Mukai will take over the role from former principal Ann Bonitatibus, who was promoted to a central office position after seven years in the role.
