Before the beginning of the 2024–2025 school year, speed-zone cameras will be installed near 12 Fauquier County Public Schools.
The installations could begin as early as February, according to Jeffrey Long, spokesman for the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office.
The Fauquier County Board of Supervisors approved the cameras in 2021, a year after the Virginia General Assembly gave the go ahead for them in school and work zones as a way to get drivers to slow down.
The sheriff’s office said the cameras are needed.
“The results of speed studies conducted in the school zones more than justified the need to slow down drivers,” says Long.
“To educate drivers and to drive the necessary culture change, the school zones will be conspicuously marked with lights and signs during the reduced speed enforcement times.”
The speed cameras will be at county schools, with the exception of those located within the town limits of Warrenton and Remington.
Long says there will be a 30-day warning period before a fine of $100 is issued.
